Adobe Illustrator can be a little tricky to get your hands around, particularly after getting used to the workflow of applications like Photoshop. The differences between layer use and the creation of objects and shapes can be really strange at first hand.
In the following tutorial you will learn how to create cute characters illustration. We will use basic tools and simple techniques (Pathfinder, Gradient, Clipping Mask, Mesh etc..) to create basic shapes, fill them, and add Adobe Illustrator effects, which will combine to create the final illustration.
Let’s get started!
Final Result
Let’s see what you will be creating in this tutorial.
Create a 1200px by 800px, RGB document.
1. Pick the Ellipse tool (L) and use it to create a 290 by 360px shape. Duplicate this shape once time (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F). With the resulting shape selected, hold down the Shift key and press the left arrow key eight times. Reselect the created shape in the first step. Then pick the Add Anchor Point Tool (+) and click on two points highlighted with yellow. Use the Direct Selection Tool (A) to select the anchor point highlighted with red and remove it. Next use the Convert Anchor Point Tool (Shift+C) adjust handles of anchor points highlighted with yellow to get the result as shown in the final image below.
2. Fill shapes with linear gradient.
3. Reselect the shape selected in the image below and duplicate it once time (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F). With the resulting shape selected, hold down Shift and click on the shape next to it. Then click on the Minus Front button from the Pathfinder panel.
4. Reselect the shape selected in the image below and duplicate it once time again (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F). Use the Add Anchor Point Tool (+) to add anchor points highlighted with yelow and magenta. Then move anchor points highlighted with magenta to positions as shown in the second image. Reselect the shape selected in the first step and fill it with a linear gradient.
5. Pick the Add Anchor Point Tool (+) and add an anchor point highlighted with yellow. Then select and remove the anchor point highlighted with red. Now pick the Convert Anchor Point Tool (Shift+C) and use it to adjust the right handle of anchor point highlighted with yellow. In the end your shape should look roughly like the third image.
6. Use the Pen Tool (P) to create a shape as shown below. Then fill this shape with a radial gradient. Finally lowered its Opacity to 90%
7. Use the Pen Tool (P) create a shape as shown below and fill it with a 30% black color.
8. Now pick the Mesh Tool (U) and click on the position in the point highlighted with red. Then use the Convert Anchor Point Tool (Shift+C) to adjust handles of anchor points highlighted with yellow and red to get result as the second image. Finally use the Direct Selection Tool (A) to select anchor points highlighted with yellow and red and then fill them as shown in the second image.
